The derivation of the word PHOTOGRAPHY comes from Greek phōs meaning "light" and graphē meaning "drawing" or "writing", literally translating to "Drawing or Writing with Light". In its essence photography is all about capturing light, either bouncing off of or being absorbed by an object. This phenomena produces colour. The iconography of and expression through colour leads down many roads; the emotional, the spiritual and the sublime, as well as its many practical applications. Colour has been scientifically defined and explained. It’s been studied by advertising people in an effort to discover its ability to affect emotions and compel behaviour. Artists have been observing and experimenting with colour…, well, for as long as there have been artists.
Inspired by the abstract expressionists and the colour field painters from the 1940s - 50s, such as Josef Albers, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and from a little earlier, Piet Mondrian and Jean Arp, I began to explore colour for myself with my latest series “COLOUR”. I currently have fourteen distinct photographs titled “CMY 1” through "CMY 14” in the series, “CMY” stands for Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. Three of these photographs were curated into “Colour Choices” a three person show, exhibited at the Elaine Fleck Gallery in May 2025. “CMY 4” is currently on display in the Women's Art Association of Canada, Dignam Gallery.
